A Bit About Me

I always wanted to travel and write a book. The travel started in East Africa and South East Asia and that seemed to encourage the writing. I kept it to myself though, for years. I did sell a travel article to a national newspaper, but I felt like I was selling out, so I just went back to writing for myself with the dreams of this "big" book still intact. So it happened organically over many years and transformed and grew from a cherubic newborn to a tantrum-throwing toddler; then from a petulant teenager into a wide-eyed adult. So here I am, twenty years later, releasing it into the world, sending it on its way, hoping the world treats it well and it finds a place in someone's heart. After all, that's what life is ultimately about.

Goodbye, Mr. Descartes

This is the front and back page of the paperback version of my book, "Goodbye, Mr. Descartes." I wanted a sense of perspective, about where the book was going (front cover) and what the book was leaving behind. A road is a great metaphor for this. Originally the view was from the inside of a car with the steering wheel and the rear view mirror visible, but it was getting far too complicated. So, just the road itself, disappearing into the distance with road signs showing where it was going and where it had been, seemed a much more powerful representation of what the book was about. However, you can't encapslate everything you want to say about a book you've written, one that encompasses almost 200,000 words, in the graphics of a book cover. Unfortunately that's just the way it is, so hopefully it captures the spirit and makes people want to read what's inside!
